Additional Funding

DGHE offers its own scholarships and bursaries, which at this time are tailored to supporting refugees in the UK, care leavers, veterans, and students from low-income families. See more information on that and how to apply below.

There are a number of non-DGHE scholarships/grants available to students before arrival that you should investigate, and if eligible, apply for as soon as possible. All information is correct at the time of publication.

Check if you are eligible for student finance, find out how much you can get, how to apply, and when you start repaying.

Extra Help
Students with Disabilities/Learning Differences, low income, and childcare/dependents requirements may be eligible for some extra help from SFE.

UK Students Disabled Students Allowance (DSA)
Students with a learning difficulty, health problem, or disability may be eligible for the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA). Check if you are eligible.

UK Mature Students
You can study at university as a mature student even if you do not have traditional qualifications. You can also apply for funding.

DGHE Scholarships and Bursaries

When you submit your application to study at DGHE, you will be given the opportunity to request that you be considered for a scholarship or bursary. We currently have 3 opportunities open to our students:

Student Success Bursary (SSB)

This bursary is for students from low-income families or areas of high deprivation. The SSB is worth £750 for new undergraduate students for each year of full-time studies.

Veterans Support Bursary (VSB)

The Veterans Support Bursary is worth £750 for new undergraduate students who have left the armed forces within the last five years for each year of full-time studies

Care Leavers Scholarship (CLS)

The Care Leavers Scholarship consists of a 20% fee waiver for each year of full-time study and a £1,000 per year bursary to help towards general living costs and expenses. It is offered to Home status undergraduate students who are joining the College having spent some time in local authority care.

 

Student Success Bursary (SSB)

This bursary is for students from low-income families and areas of high deprivation. The SSB is worth £750 for new undergraduate students for each year of full-time studies.

 

Money should never be a barrier to education. If you are from a low-income family, an area with high levels of deprivation or an area where very few students go to university, then we will offer you up to £750 each year of your course to support you with your studies and living costs. Bursary payments will be made to the student in three equal instalments of £250/term.

This scheme is here to assist students who are in need of additional financial support during the academic year and aims to help and award students with an additional grant that can be used to meet any maintenance needs, such as rental costs, travel costs, childcare costs, day-to-day costs etc. The scheme runs for a maximum of 3 years (depending on course duration) and cannot be used to pay tuition fees.

Eligibility

To apply for this bursary, you must be a UK student and:

  • Have a combined household income of less than £25000; and
  • Live in a low participation postcode, you can check here (POLAR4 quintiles 1 and 2); or
  • Live in high deprivation area, you can check here (Index of Multiple Deprivation 20% most deprived)

In addition:

  • You qualify for the maximum level of means-tested government maintenance or special support grants
  • You have been assessed by Student Finance England and have given consent for it to share your information with the College.
  • You are a fully registered undergraduate student at DGHE
  • You’ll be studying full-time on a BTEC HND or BA/BSC course.
  • You are in regular attendance and engaged with your studies.
  • You are fee assessed as a home student.
  • You are not in receipt of another bursary.

We will give priority to students from the following backgrounds:

  • First in the family to go to university
  • Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority students
  • Young carers
  • Students from military families

The bursary will be removed immediately if:

  • the student withdraws from a programme of study
  • the student is suspended or excluded from the College
  • the student has an unacceptable attendance rate (i.e. if it is below the college’s required attendance rate or has not submitted assignments for that academic term).
  • the student has made any misrepresentation or acted fraudulently or dishonestly

*Students are limited to one bursary.

 

Refugee Scholarship

If you hold status as a Refugee in the United Kingdom, DGHE wants to support your education and personal growth. We will offer you a 50% fee waiver for each year of any HND course you wish to enrol in at DGHE. We understand that you face additional challenges and will do our best to support you at every stage of your studies.

Please email your evidence from the Government of the United Kingdom confirming your status as a refugee. Please note that we are currently unable to support prospective students who are seeking asylum, but only those with approved refugee status.

Important information – Terms and Conditions

  • You must have approved refugee status in the United Kingdom
  • Be a new entrant to the College for the 2022/23 academic year
  • Be entering your first year of full-time undergraduate study at levels 4 or 5 (BTEC HND).
  • Be a ‘Home’ student for tuition fee purposes and be eligible for full tuition fees.
  • Not hold an equivalent or higher qualification, i.e. you must not already hold a qualification that is equivalent or higher to the BA/BSc degree that you will be undertaking
  • The 50% fee waiver will mean that students applying for a student loan (SLC) will take on a smaller debt each year. It also applies to self-funded students.

The bursary will be removed immediately if:

  • a student withdraws from a programme of study
  • a student is suspended or excluded from the College
  • a student has made any misrepresentation or acted fraudulently or dishonestly

*Students are limited to one bursary.

In addition:

  • Continued eligibility for this award is dependent on an attendance rate of 80% (this will be monitored throughout the academic year).
  • You must have successfully progressed onto the next year of study to be eligible for the award, so students in a repeat year of study would not receive the award.
  • You are not in receipt of another bursary.

 

Veterans Support Bursary (VSB)

This Bursary is for students who have previously served in the UK Armed Forces – and their children. The Veterans Support Bursary is worth £750 for new undergraduate students who have left the armed forces within the last five years for each year of full-time studies.

 

There are estimated to be around 2.6 million veterans living in the UK. Having served in the Armed Forces and dedicated their lives to the safety of the nation, they are men and women who have trained explicitly for the demands of military life in our nation’s unfailing defence.

This bursary gives student veterans, or students with veteran parents, the financial ability to purchase items relating to their education, to cover travel costs or to use for other general expenses.

The Veterans Support Bursary is worth £750 for new undergraduate students who have left the armed forces within the last five years (and their children) and is paid in 3 equal termly instalments. The scheme runs for a maximum of 3 years (depending on course duration) and cannot be used to pay tuition fees.

You will need to meet the following criteria to receive the bursary.

  • Have served in the armed forces and left within the past five years
  • Be the child of someone who has served in the armed forces and left within the past five years
  • You are a fully registered undergraduate student at DGHE
  • You’ll be studying full-time on a BTEC HND or BA/BSC course.
  • You are in regular attendance and engaged with your studies.
  • You are fee assessed as a home student.
  • You are not in receipt of another bursary

Care Leavers Scholarship (CLS)

If you’re a Care Leaver, we will offer you a 20% fee waiver and £1,000 for each year of your course to help you during your studies. We understand that you face additional challenges and will do our best to support you at every stage of your studies.

Important information – Terms and Conditions

  • You must have been in the care of a local authority in the UK for three months or more between the age of 14 and school-leaving age (18 years)
  • Be aged under 25 at point of entry
  • Be a new entrant to the College for the 2022/23 academic year
  • Be entering your first year of full-time undergraduate study at levels 4, 5 or 6.
  • Be a ‘Home’ student for tuition fee purposes and be eligible for total tuition fees.
  • Do not hold an equivalent or higher qualification, i.e. you must not already have an equivalent or higher qualification to the BA/BSc degree you will be undertaking.
  • You must receive the maximum Maintenance Loan assessed by the Student Loans Company.
  • Student Finance England has assessed you and consented to share your information with the College.

This bursary is part of our commitment to accessibility and widening participation in higher education. Bursary payments will be split over three termly instalments. You will get a further £200 in the final year to support the costs of attending graduation.

The 20% fee waiver will mean that students applying for a student loan (SLC) will take on a smaller debt each year.

The bursary will be removed immediately if:

  • a student withdraws from a programme of study
  • a student is suspended or excluded from the College
  • a student has made any misrepresentation or acted fraudulently or dishonestly
    *Students are limited to one bursary.

In addition:

  • Continued eligibility for this award depends on an attendance rate of 80% (this will be monitored throughout the academic year).

DGHE encourages you to seek help as early as possible if you struggle to meet your studies’ costs. Don’t wait until you have nothing; we may be able to direct you to fund or support for your particular situation.

Saving Money while you are a Student
Think ahead and research the many ways you can save money once you have enrolled as a student.

Don’t forget you can get discounted Travel, and with the student TOTUM card, you can get money off lots of shopping, including groceries.

If you lose your job or have debt, you can get Free and Impartial advice from Money Advice Service.

DGHE Dyslexia/dyspraxia Means-tested contribution for full Diagnostic Assessment
Students who suspect they may have a Specific Learning Difference (SpLD) such as dyslexia/dyspraxia/ADHD may request a free online screening via the Advice and Wellbeing Service (AWS). If the screening indicates a high probability of an SpLD, they may be referred for a full Diagnostic Assessment in order to apply for the DSA. The full cost of the Assessment is £325. If students have difficulty meeting the full cost, they may be eligible to apply for assistance with the cost of up to a maximum of £225. Students not eligible for DSA should speak with the Advice and Wellbeing Officer, who may be able to provide some funding towards costs of reasonable adjustments, such as specialist software.
